Velomobiles are not specified as individual items, they fall into the cycling (bicycle) category which is covered in the UK Highway Code. Essentially a bicycle is allowed on any road unless specifically prohibited, which are all Motorways (blue sign posts) and then specific roads due to either them being dangerous or tunnels. Bicycle riders and so velomobile riders should consider whether some roads are suitable due to either the amount of traffic using them or if they have a high speed limit e.g. 70 mph on dual carriageways (these are motorways in all but name), note a 70 mph limit means a lot of cars will be doing 80 mph! Using cycle paths/lanes is not mandatory, which is often good as they are often poorly designed and in fact dangerous for a cyclist to use. Some urban cycle paths are good though - local knowledge required. I hope this helps? So now I've finally added Belgium and the UK to Velomobile Basics .
Compared to Germany, the other countries are just bullet points with all the regulations that are relevant for velomobiles - without evaluating them. However, the lengths differ greatly: in some countries there seems to be hardly any regulation for cyclists, in other countries it is very detailed.
I’ve got a question for our UK members: Is it true that all regulations relevant for bicycles (and especially velomobiles) are mentioned in the Highway Code? Or are there additional laws that are relevant but not mentioned in the Highway Code? @Ian Perry @RoyMacDonald @KarlOnSea @F1xed @Streamliner
That’s what I expected. However, I was surprised that there are only very few regulations for bicycles; only concerning lights and bike paths. Nothing about e.g. brakes, maximum width, motors etc. like in other countries.Velomobiles are not specified as individual items, they fall into the cycling (bicycle) category which is covered in the UK Highway Code.
Apropos: Der Verkehrsgerichtstag vor paar Tagen will solche offenbar haben laut kurzer TV-Meldung ...Nothing about ... maximum width, ... etc. like in other countries.
