Forum leider die englischsprachigen (u.a.)
Alpha 7 inaugural ride report. First, the good parts. Unlike the insane twitchiness on the DF, the A7 steers like a large ship, with a great majestic slowness. I can easily ride with no hands on the tiller, something I could never do with my DF. This will hopefully lead to greater stability at higher speeds. It is nice and quiet as befits a new velomobile, unlike the rattling chaos of a well worn VM. The Kellerman turn signals/tail lights are fantastic. The built-in lift handle in the tail is a nice touch.
Now for the bad parts: speed; this A7 as supplied is over 6mph average speed slower than my DF. I will check the alignment, fit up faster tires, maybe even install wheel pants to get this moving along better. I have a 200K brevet coming up on Sunday and at this glacial rate it will take me a seeming eternity to complete it. The seat(s): I was supplied with three different seat pans and minimal guidance as to choice and fitment. And the fitting options are limited and poor. Getting in and out is a real challenge; it's a tight fit. I am a 38R suit size so clearly I am not a big guy; larger riders will have a real struggle with this issue.
I sure hope I can get this beautiful machine up to speed quickly.
Alpha 7: third ride. A real shake-down cruise, a 200K in New Jersey. Headed out in the dark at 6am, got pounded in an intense shower at 7. This brought to light a design flaw: puddles of water accumulate on the foredeck, then when the road goes really up or speeds get high enough a great puddle gets dumped into my lap. The seat, while getting slightly better, is still in need of drastic improvement. This design is vastly sub-optimal and I predict it will get updated sooner rather than later. The steering is so odd. At low speeds it feels like a car with its power steering pump on the fritz; a great muscular handful. OTOH, at speed it is a well planted joy, nearly impervious to the wild side winds I encountered today. It also “ratchets” when asked to turn after rolling along in a straight line for any real distance, like a rinneled headset. The suspension may well be unusable in the northeast with our heavily pot holed roads. Very little reasonable compliance; I’d hit potholes and it would sound like bombs going off in the wheelwells. I’ll fit up a supple fattie in the rear; perhaps this will help. I applied fairing tape to the undercarriage wheel openings as well as the leading and top edges of the outer front wheel openings. I think wheel pants will be beneficial here. I miss the shelf of the DF; I may fabricate a homegrown version made of Coroplast to aid in this velomobile’s utility value. Despite all this I rolled down the road well enough; I even snagged the course record that I have been chasing for a few years, a surprise given my decidedly low level of fitness.
