The body of the CLC teardrop in okoumé ply, without the chassis, weighs less than the Wide Path Camper and it is a full sized teardrop !!! There have been accident reports (the teardrop started being made in 2015) and the result is that plywood is pretty strong stuff.
Based on a 65 x 200 cm air mattress and using a light 3 mm poplar ply body sitting on an aluminium ladder as chassis I expect the total towed weight to be around 35 kg. I would use 20" wheels and probably have 70 mm SA brake hubs. If you look at the CLC teardrop it is aerodynamic but the shape is not only for that but also for strength.
3 sheets of poplar plywood (12 kg) cost about 60€ and an aluminium ladder 61€ (4 kg), wheels and tyres 200€ (4 kg - wide and fat). Some polycarbonate, axles, towbar and hitch a little varnish... A budget under 500€ and weight of 24 kg leaving me 11 kg for "stuff" - mattress, sleeping bag, clothes... 5 kg of solar PV charging equipment and we are around 40 kg.
I have estimated a budget for ultralight camping gear and came to about 1800 € so a 500€ DIY teardrop caravan looks like a pretty good deal I agree not the same use though.
