Like so many things the WHPSC was cancelled due to Covid-19. It did not seem like a good idea to have people fly in from all around the world, so last April the event was cancelled. Normally the even takes place in September.

As most teams use camera bikes these days it occurred to me that maybe one of the teams would be willing to provide the video and gps data allowing us to create a virtual event.

In the end the Italian Policumbent team went a full leap further and developed an entire web-based application that allows us to do just that. You can visit the webpage, connect your smart trainer via Bluetooth or Ant+, select a bike ranging from a standard road bike (I know!) to a fully faired streamliner and race these on the SR305 from the comfort of your own pain cave!

The application will be live for a week (just like the event) and you can make as many runs as you want. At the end of the run you can opt to have your results published, but it's not a race as we allow for a large number of tweaks to the virtual bikes, so results are listed in order of date/time.

At the end of the week we will host a final meeting together with a well known recumbent Youtube channel :)

For those who do not know the WHPSC: it's an annual event where people from all over the world come to race fast streamlined recumbents. The course is a closed section of state road, just outside Battle Mountain Nevada (Sr305). Riders have a 5 mile section to build up speed, followed by a 200 meter time trap and finally a section of a mile to slow down to the catch area (where bikes are literally caught). The simulation is very real as it was shot from the Taurus bike of the Italian Policumbent team.

Also schuldigung fur mein Deutsch, aber mochte noch gerne sagen das das Rennen ohne Facebook functionieren werde!

Continuing in English, we only chose to set the event up on Facebook as most IHPVA members are active there. The simulation itself will be a website with full GDPR in focus. You will need Chrome (> v83) to connect via Bluetooth to the trainer, then you can race. At the end you have the option to leave your name (can be a fake name) and email (must be real). The email will only be used to prevent fakers and used once to invite you for the closing video event. After the event we will delete all data collected.

I will publish the event website here as well, so you do not need FB.

The simulator will be available from tomorrow 15.00 on https://www.policumbent.it/whpsc-sim/

You can already visit the page to check the settings and check the connection to your trainer / power meter. You can also read more about the simulator, check out the source code on Github and read about Battle Mountain.

Da die Software mein Rollentrainer nicht erkennt hat es sich für mich leider erledigt.

Hi Axel, sorry for that. The Italian students are trying to add as many trainers, but it seems many of them actually talk some bespoke version of open protocols. It is Bluetooth? Have you seen that you can download a standalone version that also supports Ant+ (lower left corner)?
